Vision

Under the Moon is a non-governmental organisation meant to incorporate and increase community engagement in cleaning up waste polluted sites globally. The app, which is the main functionality of the NGO, is meant to give any user the opportunity to mark a waste polluted site wherever they are, post it in the app which then mark itself in a virtual map for any user to see and can set a time when to clean-up that posted area. The participants need to post a picture of the site as these, especially in remote places, carry exact coordinates and also help in assessing what gear is needed to clean up and how many people are needed according to the size of the site. Users answer questions of what the site looks like, what materials / waste are thought to be seen, what size the site has and what is possibly needed. Users participating in clean events receive compensation in form of a gift card, voucher or a service sponsored by cooperating businesses, institutions or corporations. This can range from cafés or restaurants giving out gift cards for their food or giving out left over food (just like the Too Good To Go concept, that aims to fight food waste and donates surplus food to people); This is especially helpful to people of no to low income, like those in developing countries that struggle with pollution. This would also increase people’s purpose and occupational function in society.  An example of a compensation for developed countries, that usually lack in engagement due to the comfort of the living environment, could be businesses offering vouchers and gift cards, just like Amazon or booking.com offers vouchers in connection to a cooperation with a business. An expedition of receiving a doctor’s appointment at healthcare facilities that lack capacities for patients that have no insurance or public insurance, for example in Germany, would be a helpful compensation for both developed and developing countries.

The clean-up events published by Under the Moon engage any person in a community, local or international, remote or urban. Users are able to attend from any part of the world, although travel costs are not able to be funded by Under the Moon. However, possible sponsors from travel agencies could help in alleviating costs, after a user has attended a clean-up event.

Any clean-up event has the aim to improve the environment’s biome health.

Under the Moon’s multi-sectoral approach, engaging the public, private and third sector, furthers the vision to improve environmental sustainability and therefore supports thirteen out of seventeen SDGs:

  • 1 No Poverty (Stakeholder partnership)

  • 2 Zero Hunger (Stakeholder partnership)

  • 3. Good Health and Well-Being (Stakeholder partnership)

  • 6 Clean Water and Sanitation (Pollution mitigation)

  • 7 Affordable & Clean Energy (WtE)

  • 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth (Stakeholder partnership; Participation)

Unique selling proposition

The multi-sectoral approach creates a network and a system that engages and gives back to the community and businesses, as well as savers the public sector funds that are used to clean up waste polluted sites.

Waste gathered at the sites can be donated or outsourced to businesses that can create bioenergy, upcycle or recycle materials and therefore supports a materials life-cycle.

Moreover, the Under the Moon app centralises all waste polluted sites on earth, can entertain any age-range in society to help in clean-ups, and gives a generalised, simple approach to people to help improve global sustainability.
